3 Steps for Changing Pessimism to Optimism
Published by T Harv Eker
In my follow-up to Secret #6, How to Keep Your Energy High, I talked a little bit about optimism.
I get asked all the time how a pessimist can learn to change their worldview to a more optimistic outlook and that is why I created secret #9.
Secret #9: Three Steps for Changing Pessimism to Optimism
Step #1: Awareness
Observe yourself when you’re thinking in non-supportive ways. How do you think about the experiences in your life, both good and bad? How do you describe the things that happen to you?
Learn to recognize when you’re being positive and optimistic, and when you’re being negative and pessimistic. You have to become aware!
Step #2: Understanding
Why are people pessimistic? It comes from the past, plain and simple.
There was a major disappointment, letdown or some other kind of emotional upset that triggered a pattern of thinking like, “I already know how this is gonna end—not good!”
Do some research by asking yourself quality questions.
Was there anything you could’ve done differently? What do you know now that you didn’t know then? What about all the times when things did work out? How can you apply past successes to current endeavors?
Step #3: Practice and Reward
Start wearing a rubber band. Every time you have a non-supportive thought, snap your band, and it literally snaps you back into reality.
Use this “snap and shift” technique to bring yourself back into the present moment.
Keep in mind though … you can’t just “think positive,” you have to follow it up with consistent, effective action.
But a little optimism goes a long way!
For your freedom,
